A series of history books for young people but not only, issued by the reputed Humanitas Publishing house at the idea of its director, Gabriel Liiceanu, and written by our historian Neagu Djuvara, dearest in Romanian cultural life.

N. Djuvara's writings to disseminate Romanian history were gladly received because of an accessible style, simple and complete at the same time.

An excellent recepie - accessible text, richly illustrated, well documented - for disseminating history, promoted since many years ago in Western European countries. Those books are addressed to both young and adult readers.

"The Coming to Being of the Romanian Nation"

Published in 2001, this first book of the series ‘history and legend', talks about the history of Romania's today territories, from Antiquity to the formation of the first medieval states. Although it is the least illustrated (approximately 40 images) this book was a great success because of its' interesting subject.

"Mircea cel Batran and the fights against the turcks"

The true story of the greatest leader of Valachia, and the first one who succeded in avoiding that the Romanian Country become an ottoman province.

"Form Vlad the Impaler to Dracula the Vampire"

The best book the series from the series which appeared in may 2003, describes the story of the bloody lord of the Romanian Country.

The illustration of this book took me more than a year, third part of this time being assigned to documentation. The book contains 95 pictures, most of them are illustrations, photos of monuments, paintings and medieval engravings.

The illustrations are reconstructions of monuments(most of them never seen before), fights, portraits of characters from those times(Mehmet I, Skanderbeg, Iancu de Hunedoara, Matei Corvin, Pavel Chinezu, scenes from the life of Vlad the Impaler.

I consider this to be the best book of popularization(at least in what concerns the illustrations) of all the books published in Romania or wherever about the so called ‘Dracula'.

All those who think they know enough about Vlad the Impaler will find many unexpected and interesting things about him and the time he lived in.
